Spring Steam 2016 - I USED TO BE A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

19 - 22 of May at Kellohalli, Teurastamo

ABOUT

The Spring Steam festival brings design-minded people to Kellohalli on May 19–22.

The year 2016 is a tipping point for the Visual Communication Design programme of Aalto University. Along with its iconic alumni, graphic designer Erik Bruun, the programme turns 90 years old. It has launched many inspiring stories; graduates such as Jukka Veistola, Aimo Katajamäki, Timo Berry, and Martti Mykkänen have scaled the heights of the field. The latest rising star, alumnus Lotta Nieminen, is currently living her success story in New York.

The field of visual communication steams ahead in the four-day exhibition I Used to Be a Graphic Designer. The exhibition will include a selection of works by current students, as well as historical works from the programme’s archives.

Professional designers, illustrators, and researchers of local and international renown will participate in discussions, lead seminars, and present their work. Over the weekend, the Spring Steam programme offers activities for adults and for families’ youngest members.

See you at Kellohalli!

TYPE MASK WORKSHOP

Most graphic designers have a instinctual interest in typefaces and type. But all work and not play can turn even the most passionate graphic designer into a dull boy (or girl). To get the play back to work attend this workshop where you can rediscover your passion for type using a process called "Design Through Making" plus some good old arts and crafts fun. The workshop is suitable for all ages and does not require any degree in graphic design, good taste or general life skills.

CHILDERN'S CREATE AND MAKE WORKSHOP
Lazy/relaxed/busy/bossy/quick/cool/romantic letters

All children are welcome to create and have fun exploring design together with Design Museum experts. In our Create and Make Workshop children are designers and create their own font designs by cutting, painting, and drawing. First we’ll look at examples of design and typography, then use experimental techniques to create your own style. Most children learn to read going letter by letter, but when do we learn to read visual language? The workshop is ideal for children aged 5 to 12 years.

EXHIBITION

OPENING HOURS:
Thu 19.5 Opening Party
17:00 - 21:00
Fri 20.5 - Sun 22.5
10:00 - 18:00

I Used to Be a Graphic Designer emphasizes the versatility of a profession whose boundaries are becoming more and more blurred. As a primarily visual discipline, graphic design doesn’t get much visibility in the gallery or museum exhibitions, compared to, for instance, visual art or product design.

The exhibition title references the shift that is happening in the graphic design field with the arrival of new media and new concepts. Change also comes to the academy: formerly known as Graphic Design Programme, the Visual Communication Design Programme at Aalto University recently got its new name. Masters level courses taught in the department now include Hybrid Literature, Critical Design, Visual Narrative, Storytelling, Information Design, and Interactive Visualization.

The exhibition content is chronologically divided in two parts. Pieces from the Aalto University archives span the 90 years of the department history, from the 1920s until the 2000s. Posters, advertisements and package design samples from the past provide a glimpse at the evolution of aesthetics and ideas. With a selection of submissions by current students and alumni, an other section explores new viewpoints and gazes into the future of the field. Individual and collective works on display include video, animation, illustration, packaging, and web design.
